No More Popcorn!

getting started!

February 12 - 18, 2018

the aftermath
This week has been full of ceilings... scraping, painting, texturing and all that goes with that! You saw what we did with our kitchen in the last post, and we started on the living room and hallway this week. Daniel and I had off Friday and then the following Monday, so we set into things on Friday after dropping Della off at daycare. Thank goodness for my Dad and Dan who came and helped big time with scraping all that awful popcorn! I think we finally have it figured out... you need to use a garden sprayer with hot water and really soak it. Then let it sit for a few minutes and it seems to come off a lot easier. We definitely would not have been able to do this (and not as quickly) without the scaffolding platform we got from Lowe's! It made it so much safer to be up that high, as our ceiling is about 12 feet at it's highest point. A couple years ago Daniel had used a ladder to get up there to try and clean the beams and it was just to wobbly and scary! We also not only put plastic on the walls, but did the floor too, which made clean up a lot easier! Now we need to finish cleaning the beams, they have mildew on them from some condensation from years past, and prime everything. We will be painting the beams as well because they are a ugly orange-y wood color. Then I'll add the texture like we've done on the other ceilings.

These are the paint colors we're using in the house... I know, they're all gray except the linen color. But I love grays and wanted neutral colors so that they wouldn't get outdated and look weird in the years to come (Anybody remember the mauve and country blue phase of the 90's? Or that mulberry candle your mom burned all the time? *shout out to my mom! 😉) The "crisp linen" is the color we're using in the bathrooms, and the middle of the lower gray card is the bedroom color with the middle of the top card as an accent color. We used this on the bookshelf in the nursery and it will be the color of the beams in the living room ceiling. I had a tan color picked out for the living room but then decided that didn't go because we don't have tan anywhere else. I want the house to be lighter, not so dark and panelly... so the living room and kitchen will be the lightest gray, "polar star".
My vision for the kitchen is for the upper cabinets to be white and the lowers gray with copper pulls to match the copper sink we've looked at. Here is a pic from Pinterest that kinda steered my vision:
I just love how clean and fresh it looks! We're getting a new counter top and will put in a tile back splash ourselves.

We had a good Valentine's Day as well, we cooked at home so that we could stay Whole30 and went to our church's Ash Wednesday service. Della was so precious when she got her ashes on her forehead! She was really paying attention to Bro. Ian and held really still! She wore her heart dress to school and looked super cute!

Della still hasn't started crawling yet but she's. so. close. I got her a play mat (that is so cute!) so that I can put it anywhere for her to play on. Since our floors are still plywood and will be for a while, at least she can roll around and play. I also put down blankets and such because she tends to roll off a lot!

Oh, and if anybody knows anybody that would want a piano, we have one that needs to be moved before we put down floors... Its beautiful but we just don't have the room. If you want it and will come get it... it's yours! I've posted it on the Facebook Marketplace here for $100 but I'll make you an offer you can't refuse... free! But for real...  I had to move this thing 3 times this weekend and I need it to go!
You know you want this...
imageOh! And I forgot this last time, but I entered one of the photos that Daniel took of me for graduation in the Phi Kappa Phi photo contest and got into the top 10 finalist!! So do me a solid and go vote for me HERE by Feb 25th! I could win a $100 Amazon gift card and you'd make Daniel and award winning photographer!
